Report of Wire Strike Accidents in Army Aircraft 1 July 1957 through 31 December 1965.

Abstract

In-flight wire strikes continue to be a significant factor in Army aircraft accidents. A total of 321 Army aircraft wire strike mishaps were reported to USABAAR during the period 1 July 1957-31 December 1965. More than one-third of these mishaps occurred in the past two and one-half years. Flight altitude above the terrain is a major factor in the occurrence of wire strike mishaps. Fifty percent (159) of all wire strikes happened during the takeoff and landing phase; the remaining 50% (162) occurred during level flight.
