A Vortex Lattice Program for Prediction of Box Wing Aerodynamic Performance.

Abstract

A digital computer program was developed that would predict the aerodynamic performance of a box wing system in subsonic, inviscid, irrotational, steady, and attached flow. The program used a non-planar vortex lattice method to approximate the wing characteristics. A box wing system consists of two horizontal wings of equal span with their corresponding tips connected by a vertical wing. This forms a closed rectangle which was predicted by Von Karman to have the lowest possible induced drag for a given span and area.
