Plate Tectonics and the Discrimination of Underground Explosions from Earthquakes

Abstract

The following work was undertaken during this contract: Develop long-period seismic instrumentation techniques with emphasis on increasing sensitivity and on discriminating against noise; (2) Investigate the general characteristics of seismograms with emphasis on studies of higher mode surface waves, core phases, and multiples of P and S and methods to selectively enhance these phases; (3) Investigate aspects of the new global tectonics relevant to the problems of detection and identification of seismic events and of selecting optimum sites for seismic instrumentation; (4) Using large array data, conduct detailed studies of wave propagation, of source characteristics, and of surface and body waves of short and long periods originating at teleseismic distances with particular emphasis of regions with complicated crust and mantle structure such as island arcs; (5) Conduct studies of near earthquakes and explosives to determine properties of the source, or the propagation path of the crust and upper mantle in the vicinity of explosions and shallow earthquakes; (6) Develop high-speed computational techniques for the solution of associated computational problems; (7) Conduct a comprehensive seismic and geologic study of anomalous and intraplate earthquakes events falling within the explosion discrimination, their respective tectonic setting and methods of their positive identification; and (8) Develop earth models of continent-continent collision zones in Europe, Asia and South America, according to recent concepts of plate tectonics.
