The Detection Capabilities of Gallium Arsenide and S-20 Photo-Multiplier Tubes to GO-Type, Point-Source, Signals.

Abstract

The GO-type, point-source detection capabilities of typical, available, GaAs and S-20 photo-multiplier tubes are calculated at + or - 20 C for systems employing telescope apertures ranging from 2.5 in. to 48 in., for four decades of sampling rates, for night-sky brightnesses of 22m to 17m per sq arc sec, and primarily for a signal-to-noise ratio of six and a field-of-view of 30 arc sec x 30 arc sec. In certain special instances, other ratios and fields are considered. The results indicate the superiority (0.7 - 5.0 visual magnitudes of detectability) of the cooled GaAs tube over the S-20 tube under the conditions considered. The detailed results and comparisons are presented in the form of a series of Tables. (Author)
