Structural Inelasticity. XIII. Finite Element Models for Elastic-Plastic Structures.
Abstract
It is shown how a consistent finite element model for an elastic-plastic material can be derived by a well-defined sequence of elementary steps. A restricted kinematically admissible field is defined in each generic element and substituted into the internal and external work to lead naturally to appropriate definitions for generalized stresses, strains, and forces. The Principle of Virtual Work then leads to the necessary static relations between the generalized stresses. Finally, elastic-plastic constitutive relations are derived from the expression for internal work and some simplifications are suggested. The theory is illustrated with finite element models for beams, plane strain, plain stress, and torsion. (Author)
