Particle Motion and Diffusion in Geometric Mirrors.

Abstract

Expressions are derived for the full bounce period and second adiabatic invariant of a charged particle trapped in a geometric mirror (which confines plasma by means of a magnetic surface layer). Fieldfree regions of double-conical and ellipsoidal shape are treated explicitly as special cases, and global diffusion equations are derived for these cases by bounce-averaging the equation for local pitch-angle diffusion caused by collisions with the coexisting neutral gas.
