Investigation of Fine-Scale Three-Dimensional Chemical Laser Nozzles - Final Report on Research Work on Advanced Chemical Laser Nozzles.

Abstract

An investigation of fine-scale three-dimensional chemical laser (HF/DF) nozzles was carried out. Under Task I three fine-scale cold reaction nozzles having different aerodynamic features were designed. Under Task II the 1-in. x 8-in. cold reaction nozzle fabricated in Task I was tested. The three fine-scale cold reaction segments fabricated in Task I were tested in Task III. A 1-in. segment of the fine scale chain reaction nozzle was also tested in Task III. Under Task IV theoretical analyses were carried out on the vibrational population distribution in the chain reaction nozzle and on the effect of alternative reactants on the performance of the cold reaction nozzle. Under Task V additional extensive tests of the 1-in. x 8-in. cold reaction nozzle were carried out to obtain a better correlation of the performance of this nozzle. Under Tasks VI and VII variable geometry cavity and diffuser walls with and without boundary layer injection were designed, fabricated and assembled.
