Resolution and Error Limits in Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems.
Abstract
The purpose of this report is to estimate the best case resolution capability of a synthetic aperture radar system when the data is reduced in a coherent optical processor. The cross track or range resolution is provided by standard pulse echo timing. The along track or azimuth resolution is provided by the synthetic aperture created in that dimension. It is shown that the processor may introduce a coupling of azimuth and range information. Through judicious choice of system parameters this coupling may be minimized and azimuth resolution improved. Of particular interest is the result that, when present, this coupling may be reduced by reducing the angular beamwidth of the transmitting/receiving aperture. This shortens the synthetic aperture and thus violates one's intuitive feeling that resolution should always be improved with increased aperture size. (Author)
