Technical Report Sustained Operations Model. Helicopter War Game Simulator.

Abstract

The Sustained Operations Model (SOM) is an event sequenced Monte Carlo simulation computer program that utilizes externally generated cost and single mission effectiveness results to examine the effectiveness of a group of attack helicopter (AH) aircraft operating in a combat environment over a sustained period of operations. The single mission effectiveness inputs used by SOM are generated by an external program such as GLOBAL or EVADE, complex combat simulation programs that evaluate the outcome of an attack by an AH fire team against enemy ground units that include an air defense capability. The cost factor is represented in the actual use of SOM, where comparisons of alternative AH systems are based on using equal cost force sizes. Additional cost factors can also be applied to end game results such as aircraft losses, ordnance and fuel expenditures, and maintenance demands, to derive comparative operational costs during the period of operations.
