Design of a Prosthetic Mitral Valve Incorporating the Hemofoil.

Abstract

This report describes the application of an airfoil-like disc to the design of a prosthetic mitral valve for the human heart. The testing procedures and results of these tests are described herein. The results of these tests have indicated that the hemofoil type valve has many desirable characteristics in comparison to current prosthetic mitral valves. Therefore, it is recommended that implanation in laboratory animals for prolonged periods of time be performed to validate the valve's performance.
