Data Assimilation Restorative-Iterative Model (RIMOD).

Abstract

The complex, multi-layer, atmospheric prediction model, PEM76, was redesigned for studying geostrophic adjustment (dynamic initialization) and satellite-data assimilation using 'orbital' integration techniques tested in simple primitive-equation models by Mesinger (1972) and Temperton (1973). The utility and computational expense of such dynamic initialization, which is a procedure for preparing a stabilized model context for data sensitivity tests, is examined using several model versions. Comparative performance data are presented in terms of statistical measures of model parameters (kinetic energy, velocity divergence, vertical motion, vorticity).
