A High Angular Resolution Study of the Neutral Hydrogen in the IrrII Galaxy M82. (8),

Abstract

A 4.4 arc min resolution survey of the HI structure and kinematics of a region centered on M 82 is presented. Based upon these observations a model of IrrII or IO galaxies is presented. It is suggested that most of these peculiar galaxies were gas-poor ellipticals or SO systems that have experienced a recent injection of fresh gas. The effects of this activity account for the present disordered and chaotic appearance of these systems.
