A Statistical Procedure for Optimization of PERT (Project Evaluation and Review Technique) Network Scheduling Systems.

Abstract

This report is concerned with developing and documenting a system for the statistical analysis and optimization of Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) network scheduling systems. Previous research and results are noted and documented. A technique to allow for network simplification based upon 'blocks' of activity configurations is discussed. Approximation of network completion time distribution and moments based on two points from each activity's completion time distribution is studied, and extended to allow for unequal probability at each percentile. Also, a procedure for optimum allocation of time to project activities when network completion time is to be reduced or compressed is presented. Existing computer programs are modified, tested and documented. New codes have been prepared as required and combined with the others to facilitate implementation of the total program package. The integrated system incorporating all areas is explained, so as to provide for statistical and optimization analysis of PERT networks.
