Electromagnetic Radiation System (EMRS) for Susceptibility Testing.

Abstract

The function of the Electromagnetic Radiation System (EMRS) is to generate electromagnetic energy so as to produce a constant field strength that can be automatically scanned as a function of frequency. The design objective is to cover the frequency range of 30 hertz to 40 gigahertz with field strength intensities up to 200 volts per meter. An analysis of military standards, in which similar fields are used to evaluate the electromagnetic susceptibility of military equipment, indicates that present equipment configurations are unsuitable for this application due to limitations of their characteristics and lack of programming capability. An analysis of commercially available equipment indicates that adequate electronics are available for EMRS use except in the area of 18 gigahertz to 40 gigahertz. A parallel plate line is proposed to be used as the field generating device for the lower frequencies. At the higher frequencies, reflector type antennas are proposed. (Author)
