The Intelligentsia and the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Abstract

The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 was, in a sense, the culmination of a reform movement which had its beginnings in eighteenth century Russia. The members of the Russian intelligentsia were active participants in the crusade for political and social modernization and their efforts contributed heavily to the weakening and eventual fall of the monarchy and the triumph of Marxism in Russia. The purpose of this study is to examine the immediate effects of the Bolshevik Revolution on the members of the old Russian intelligentsia as reflected in the memoirs and literature of the period.
