The Effect of Continuous Noise on Short Term Memory Performance Tasks.

Abstract

Naval officers routinely perform a number of tasks requiring short term memory under conditions of moderate background noise levels. The performance of 20 Navy officers on a serial short term memory task was analyzed under two levels of difficulty and two different sound levels. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether moderate intensity, continuous noise had an effect on short term memory. Analysis of the data collected indicated that continuous noise at a sound level pressure of 85 dB had no effect on the subjects short term memory. Levels of difficulty resulted in a significant difference in performance on the serial short term memory task used in this experiment. (Author)
