Abstract
The Working Conference on Oceanographic Data Systems is a forum for the presentation of the state of the art. These papers provide a projection of the future of oceanographic data systems and their role in interfacing the research scientist to the ocean. A great deal of experience has been accumulated and the conferees are now in a position to recommend directions which they, as a community, would like to see taken to standardize and consolidate their efforts so that they can provide better service to the oceanographic community.
