Positron, Electron and Photon Interaction Experiments.

Abstract

The following were studied: (1) Momentum density measurements--Using the angular correlation of annihilation radiation, the momentum density and the Fermi surface of pure metals and disordered substitutional alloys has been studied and compared with theoretical predictions. The ordered alloys V3Si, V3Ge and V2O3 have also been studied. (2) Vacancy studies--Using angular correlation and positron lifetime techniques the behavior of positrons trapped at vacancy sites has been studied as a function of temperature, in order to measure vacancy activation energies in Pb and Pb alloys. (3) Slow positron interactions with solid surfaces--A high intensity slow positron beam facility has been constructed and the interaction of approximately eV positrons with various solid surface has been studied. A large positronium production cross section has been observed and has been used to detect the excited states of positronium.
