Dynamic behavior of Laminated Polymeric Matrix Composites.

Abstract

The primary goal of this two-year program is to quantify, numerically and experimentally, the dynamic response of idealized laminated graphite-epoxy fan blades subjected to impact loads. Two impact cases will be studied: one is the short-time local response, idealized by wave propagation in laminated plates. The other is the structural response idealized by laminated beam. For each case, both numerical calculation and experimental tests will be conducted. The calculation will be based on a lamination theory and method of characteristic code. The experiments will involve a pendulum plate impact system. This report includes results of the theoretical and experimental predictions of wave velocities and strain histories for the case of inplane impact of aluminum, graphite epoxy cross-ply, and graphite epoxy angle-ply plates. In addition, preliminary results for the shear-loading impact of the aluminum plate are presented. (Author)
