Investigate Fiber Reinforced Si3N4.

Abstract

The report evaluates the Si3N4 system with emphasis on attempting to protect the Ta wires from oxidation by using a siliciding treatment prior to hot pressing, a Weibull analysis of RT strength of Si3N4-Ta composites, the thermal fatigue testing of Si3N4 and Si3N4-Ta wedge shaped samples between a furnace at 1300C and a cold (40C) fluidized bed, and an attempt to identify the grain boundary phases present in two different Si3N4 + 15 wt % Y2O3 materials. In addition, elevated temperature MOR and creep studies were done on Si3N4 + 15% Y2O3 + Ta composite samples.
