Investigate Feasibility of Utilizing Acoustic Emission Methods to Evaluate the Integrity of a Prototype ADAPTS Oil Storage Container.

Abstract

This report discusses acoustic emission characteristics of nylon fiber-polyurethane material used in the U.S. Coast Guard's Prototype Oil Storage Container, a subsystem of the Air Deliverable Anti-Pollution Transfer System (ADAPTS). Characteristics were determined by laboratory testing. Results are considered in the interest of potential use of acoustic emission methods to evaluate the physical integrity of items manufactured with this material. Generation of acoustic emission and its relationship to material loading were favorable to the intended application. The specific application is concluded to be impractical, however, due to high attenuation of acoustic emission signals in the material. Acoustic emission does have potential application to this type of material where a low attenuation signal transmission path such as metal sheathing is available. (Author)
