Maximizing User Acceptance - A Systems Approach

Abstract

One of the goals of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) is to insure that newly developed items of clothing and equipment can be worn by the combat infantryman with minimum degradation in performance. An equally important but sometimes overlooked goal is maximizing the probability that troops in the field will accept new items and employ them in prescribed fashion. These two goals, which might be broadly categorized as 'operational suitability' and 'user acceptance' respectively, are not mutually exclusive, but the former is often achieved at the expense of the latter. That is to say, failure to adequately consider the user's judgment of an response to item characteristics is often linked with the materiel developer's preoccupation with satisfying a set of required operating characteristics.
