Neuronal Properties of a Neuroblastoma X Sympathetic Ganglion Cell Hybrid.

Abstract

Clonal mouse neuroblastoma cells which lack tyrosine hydroxylase activity were fused with normal cells from embryonic mouse sympathetic ganglia. One of the 37 hybrid cell lines obtained has high tyrosine hydroxylase activity and synthesizes dopamine. These cells have excitable membranes and generate action potentials in response to electrical stimuli. We conclude that fusion of neuroblastoma cells with cells from the normal nervous system yields hybrids cells which have acquired neuronal properties that are absent in the neuroblastoma. Such cell lines may provide a more suitable model system than any presently available for the study of the mechanisms of central nervous system damage induced by radiation and other injurious agents.
