Super Hydrides.

Abstract

9-Borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane has been found to be a highly selective and mild reducing agent in organic synthesis. 9-Borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane reduces alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding allylic alcohols in the presence of other functional groups. Various methods for the synthesis of highly hindered lithium trialkylborohydride have been examined. Lithium trisiamylborohydride has been found to reduce cyclic ketones with exceptional steric control. Lithium triethylborohydride reduces alkyl tosylates cleanly to their corresponding alkanes. New and novel reactions of lithium triethylborohydride with aryl sulfones, olefins, and acetylenes have been studied.
