Water Quality Assessment for the Proposed RDX-HMX Facility Newport Army Ammunition Plant.

Abstract

This environmental assessment directs itself to the impact of an RDX-HMX manufacturing facility at Newport Army Ammunition Plant. The waste discharge of the proposed facility will enter the Wabash River three miles above Montezuma, Indiana, carrying munitions residues and compounds associated with their manufacture. Presently, only TNT is produced at NAAP and waste loading effects will contain these residues along with those of RDX-HMX. The impact of treated NAAP wastes on the Wabash River will be limited to possible slight biostimulatory effects from increased nitrate nitrogen. Discharge of even raw RDX-HMX waste would have a negligible effect on oxygen balance in the Wabash River under average flow conditions.
