Ocean Current Profile Measurements in the Western Mediterranean, USNS KANE Cruise 343601-II.
Abstract
This data report is intended to document and provide graphic display of profiling current meter (PCM) data acquired by the USNS KANE on Cruise 34031, Leg II, sponsored by the Naval Oceanographic Office. The purpose of the cruise was to determine the vertical structure of horizontal velocity in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The operating area, known as the Alboran Sea, is east of the Straits of Gibralter between 35 deg 20'N and 36 deg 40'N latitude and between 2 deg 30'W and 5 deg 10'W longitude. The cruise began 1 August 1975 and ended 24 August 1975. In the area of investigation water flowing into the Mediterranean from the Atlantic overlies the nearly uniform Mediterranean water, which is flowing out over the sill at the bottom. PCM measurements indicate that the two counter-flowing currents do have significant vertical structure in depth zones where temperature and salinity are nearly constant. The current profiles show evidence for the recirculating anticyclonic gyre found by Lanoix (1972) and Capart and Steyaert (1963) in the Western Alboran Basin, and also indicate a possible cyclonic gyre in the Eastern Alboran basin. This report contains all of the PCM data acquired in this field experiment. STD and fixed-level current meter data were also acquired by the Naval Oceanographic Office in the same area during this period.
