Drift (Net Displacement) Produced by Density Perturbations in Stratified Fluids.

Abstract

We consider the initial-value problem for two-dimensional density perturbations of finite amplitude in an incompressible, viscous, stratified fluid. We demonstrate that evaluation of the 'drift,' or net displacement, field can be reduced to a simple quadrature for a wide class of localized disturbances. Results of possible experimental use are obtained which allow certain characteristics of the initial density perturbation to be deduced from limited knowledge of the drift field and the shape of the region containing the initial density perturbation.
