Troposcatter Performance Monitoring and Fault Isolation.

Abstract

Performance monitoring and fault isolation techniques for troposcatters radio links were devised and evaluated through on-the-air tests using the AN/MRC-98 Radio set. The AN/MRC-98 was modified to provide demultiplexing of a common 12 VF channel group from the basebands of each of the 4 diversity receivers as well as from the diversity-combined baseband. A measurement sensitive to the performance of the radio equipment was simultaneously and continuously performed in the same channel of each of these groups. The relative values of these redundant measurements at any one time provides an indication of the relative performance of those sections of the radio which are common to the individual measurements. Investigation of a bit error rate monitoring approach and a link noise measurement analysis approach is described. Both measurement approaches are supplemented by received signal level data for correlation and fault isolation purposes. Recommendations for implementing a tropo performance monitoring subsystem are presented. (Author)
