Investigation of Advanced Helicopter Structural Designs. Volume 2. Free Planetary Transmission Drive

Abstract

This volume investigates the free planetary transmission as applied to a utility transport helicopter. High-power rotary speed reduction gearing in helicopter transmissions usually takes the form of conventional epicyclic planetary reduction units. Research and development has led to development of the free planet transmission concept. This type of drive, compared with conventional two-stage planetary transmissions, promises several advantages, including 10% lighter weight, 16.5% lower cost in 500-unit quantities, 1/2 percent greater efficiency, almost twice the reliability, and greater tolerance to loss of lubrication.
