Mathematical and Computer Studies of Natural Languages.

Abstract

The report summarizes research on the syntax and semantics of natural languages. Empirical data were collected in the form of corpora from children speaking English, French, and Mandarin Chinese. Probabilistic grammars were written for the corpora. In addition, the model-theoretic semantics of the utterances was studied. A number of classical semantical issues were considered in relation to the corpora collected: the logic of propositional attitudes, the use of quantifiers, de re and de dicto modes of reference, the logic of definite descriptions, the logic of indefinite descriptions.
