A Survey of the Effectiveness of Control Methods for Fires in Some Hazardous Chemical Cargoes.

Abstract

Assessment of fire safety of marine bulk chemical carriers was attempted. Lack of data on quantities, cargo size, and transfer rates hampered the effort and precluded estimation of the range of fire sizes which might be encountered. An even more serious limitation is the lack of data on the effectiveness of fire control agents for the 29 chemicals studied. The available data are tabulated, even though the fire extinguishment information was obtained on scattered, small-scale tests which do not permit reliable scale-up.
