A Canonical Form For the Problem of Estimating Smooth Surfaces.

Abstract

It is shown how the problem of estimating a smooth surface on a rectangle in Euclidean p-space, which is measured discretely and with normally distributed errors, reduces to the problem of estimating the mean of a multivariate normal vector. Two empirical Bayes type estimates are noted, and it is observed that cross-validation is useful in certain cases. (Author)
