Naval Fleets in the Communist Sphere of Influence in East Asia (Kriegsflotten im Kommunistischen Machtbereich Ostasiens),

Abstract

Some time before the beginning of 1975, Marine Rundschau (MR) concerned itself with a navy in the communist sphere of influence in East Asia for the first time. Its reason for doing so was the fact that the occupation of the Paracelsus Islands by vessels of the Communist Chinese Navy was a matter of current interest at the time. No such reason exists this time, but the annual edition of Jane's Fighting Ships that appeared recently offers some interesting details on the fleets of two communist nations in East Asia, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and North Korea. From them it is clear that quite close cooperation exists between those two nations in maritime matters. On the other hand, the Soviet Union only appears more or less incidentally, for cooperation of that nature with her is pretty nearly nonexistent (and certainly it does not exist any longer with the PRC). Her role there seems to consist of delivering naval vessels to the North Korean Navy, and more intensively again in recent times than in past years.
