Chemical Neutralization of Trinitrotoluene,

Abstract

In order to optimize the rate of reaction of cast trinitrotoluene with an amine neutralizing solution, screening experiments were performed using more than twenty solvents of many chemical types, including ethers, ketones, amides, nitriles, and nitroalkanes. A similar number of amines were also screened with the two best solvents, acetone and acetonitrile, as well as primary and secondary aliphatic, aromatic, heterocyclic and polyamines. Subsequent field tests using 100 gram castings of trinitrotoluene eliminated many of the candidate amine systems because they required excessive amounts of solution to yield reasonably rapid dissolution rates. The results of these tests gave isopropylamine in either acetone or acetonitrile as the most promising chemical system.
