Software Management and the Testing of Weapons System That Contain an Embedded Computer System.

Abstract

The Department of Defense has embarked on an ambitious program to apply the same engineering and management techniques to the acquisition of weapon system related software that has been applied to the acquisition of hardware in order to convert software management from an art to a technical discipline. This program has been formalized as the DOD Weapon System Software Management Program. This report presents a general overview of this Program, points out a limitation of the Program related to software test and evaluation, and discusses the software test and evaluation considerations that must be emphasized during the software development process.
