Metric Conversion Impact upon Department of Defense Materiel Acquisition Managers.

Abstract

This study focuses on information and guidance concerning the impact of the conversion to the metric system in the Department of Defense. It includes a brief review of metric history, and a report on various positions of interest groups, which include industry, small business and labor, to present their thinking or desires concerning the metric conversion. A status is given on metrication activities in industry and the Federal government to bring materiel acquisition managers up-to-date and contribute to their planning for metrication. Implications are developed and conclusions drawn that should be useful in understanding the impact of metrication on DoD, specifically in the areas of cost, technical performance, schedule, and mission.
