Spectrographic Investigation of (Gd.8Eu.2)2(MoO4)3.

Abstract

A basic spectrographic study of ferroelectric/elastic (Gd(.8)Eu(.2))2(MoO4)3 was completed. The absorption and emission were looked at under different temperatures and excitation. For absorption the Cary 14 was used and data was taken at room temperature, 77 deg. K, and 4.2 deg. K. Excitation for emission studies was provided by an argon laser and a high pressure mercury lamp. Polarized and unpolarized spectra were taken at room temperature and at 77 deg. K. The main groups of lines were located in the following areas: 590 nm, 615 nm, and 700 nm. Some dual peaks were observed indicative of the two lattice sites Eu occupies in the ferroelectric phase. When the crystal was heated above the transition temperature the fluorescence showed mainly temperature broadening effects. Considering the results of the experiments conducted, Gd2(MoO4)3 is an attractive laser host material and EU3+ is a promising active ion.
