Exploratory Development of Laser-Hardened Materials and Measurement of Laser Beam Parameters and Material Response to High-Power Laser Radiation. Volume I.

Abstract

This three-volume report summarizes research efforts undertaken in a two-year research program to develop two laboratories at AFML for studies of the interaction of high-power CO2 laser beams with materials of interest to the USAF. In Volume I, various elements of the laboratories developed by Battelle are discussed, including systems for beam transport, event sdequencing, safety control, irradiation timing, alignment, target air flow, data acquisition, data reduction, and laser beam mapping. Target diagnostic techniques are also described in Volume I. Volume II contains Appendices A-E which present detailed schematics, listings, and drawings for some of the laser laboratory systems. Volume III contains Appendix F (classified) which presents a new concept for hardening materials to laser radiation.
