Thesis: Massive Retaliation -- Antithesis: Flexible Response Synthesis: The Nixon Doctrine.
Abstract
In light of the existing threat and the recently declared Nixon Doctrine by which we propose to meet it, this essay examines the expectations and weaknesses of the military aspects of previous strategies and suggests how future pitfalls for the use of force in pursuit of national goals may be avoided. The prescription is relatively simple, though it will not be easy to execute: analyze each situation carefully before military force is committed to insure that the objectives sought will achieve our goals and that they are, in fact, attainable within a reasonable time by the contemplated force.
