Electronically Programmable PSK SAW Devices.

Abstract

This report describes the work conducted by United Technologies Research Center during the period from 7 October 1975 through 6 April 1976, on a research and development program entitled, 'Electronically Programmable PSK SAW Devices.' Research under this program is directed toward the development of a state-of-the-art Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) module for use in electronically programmable, long code PSK signal correlation and encoding. The program is based on the UTRC PSK Diode-Correlator, a unique SAW device that utilizes nonlinear mixing phenomena in a hybrid semiconductor delay line configuration. When fully developed in 64 and 128 tap modular form, the PSK Diode-Correlator module will provide advantages in maximum chip rate, minimum tap dissipation, and electronic flexibility. Experimental work during this period has been directed toward final selection of the correlator interaction region tap design through diagnostic measurements on four candidate structures. Two 128 tap devices having the selected tap design are now in the final stages of fabrication. Broadband transducer matching circuits for the cascade delay channel have also been optimized and characterized. In addition, a cascade circuit analysis has been formulated on the computer to predict degradation of the correlation response caused by system or device errors.
