Road Foundations: Problems of Bearing Capacity and Frost Resistance (Les Fondations des Chaussees les Problemes de la Portance et la Resistance au Gen),

Abstract

Problems encountered in the construction of road foundations and principal causes of road failure are summarized, and countermeasures are described on the basis of studies by the Swiss Union of Road Professionals and the Geotechnical Laboratory of Lausanne University. Preliminary survey procedures and the evaluation of data on the frost-susceptibility of soils, their bearing capacity, sensitivity to water, regional hydrological conditions, and freezing depths are discussed. Design specifications are given for foundations for flexible and rigid pavements in frost-susceptible soils, and data are tabulated and graphed.
