Investigating Fire Safe Fuel Effects on Elastomer Components of Diesel Injector/Pump Systems.

Abstract

In conjunction with a previous fire safe fuel compatibility study, a second program was conducted to fully assess the effects of the 5-percent-volume Bromochloromethane fire safe fuel additive on molded elastomer components used in diesel fuel delivery systems. Representative samples of current-production O-ring parts were obtained from four manufacturers and then subjected to a series of time-temperature immersion conditions using two reference diesel fuels. Subsequent examination of the exposed molded components revealed in some instances significant changes in their properties, which indicated a potential problem area. (Author)
