Surveillance and Research on Infectious Diseases Along the Trans-Amazon Highway.

Abstract

The Evandro Chagas Institute, Belem, which has been studying infectious diseases in the Amazon region for over 30 years, therefore decided to carry out epidemiological and ecological investigations in March of 1971 aimed at identifying and describing present and potential problems in the Amazon. Field trips were undertaken to 10 different areas along the Trans-Amazon and Santarem-Cuiaba highways to capture and examine wild animals and vectors for the detection of foci of zoonotic disease. Specific sorologic surveys were also planned, and a leishmania skin-test survey including children and adults was carried out.
