'Predicting Leader behavior from a Measure of behavioral Intent'.

Abstract

A recent program of leadership research has relied on a measure of behavioral interest in thirty hypothetical decision-making cases as a surrogate for actual leader behavior in real situations. In this investigation, the validity of this instrument is examined by comparing these statements of intent with respondents' reported behavior in similar but real situations. Although apparent random error may make accurate individual predictions from a response to any single case difficult, both parametric and nonparametric analyses suggest the instrument to be predictive of actual behavior for sets of responses and therefore appropriate for testing relationships across subjects. Responses to the instrument, however, are not predictive of behavior in decision situations judged as having unsuccessful outcomes. Possible reasons for their lack of relationship in this subset of situations and methods for increasing the validity of the instrument are suggested. (Author)
