Ultrasonic Procedures for the Determination of Bond Strength.

Abstract

Substantial progress was made in developing a sound resource base in model analysis, data acquisition, and signal processing for advancing the state of the art in the ultrasonic inspection of adhesive bonds. A computer program was developed with the capability of calculating the theoretical longitudinal and shear reflections from a homogeneous isotropic adhesion bond due to an obliquely incident longitudinal wave. A fast data acquisition system consisting of a PDP 11/05 minicomputer, Biomation 8100 A/D converter and a Tektronix 4014 graphics display was also developed. Attention is now being placed on examining the ultrasonic inspection potential of additional metal to metal adhesive bonds, and separately, the examination of selected composite materials, the procedures of which use basic concepts presented in this report.
