Generation of Coherent VUV and Soft X-Rays

Abstract

The goal of this program is the generation of coherent vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray radiation. During this reporting period our efforts have been concentrated on three frequency summing in Ne, described in Section II. Our studies of the feasibility of using optically induced energy exchange collisions for short wavelength lasers has been suspended in order to concentrate our efforts on the harmonic generation scheme. In addition, we no longer believe that the previously reported experiment can be considered a demonstration of optically induced collisions. Details of the difficuly are given in Appendix A, the text of a paper presented at the International Conference on Tunable Lasers and Applications. Further effort at demonstrating the effect is continuing under the Office of Naval Research and the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration sponsorship.
