Drag-Reduction Characteristics of Ionic Polymers in the Presence and Absence of an Electrical Charge.

Abstract

A series of flow-drag measurements was made to determine whether the drag reduction characteristics of ionic polymer compounds are altered by the presence of an electrical charge. A rotating disk apparatus was used to generate torque and to transfer an electrical charge to dilute polymer solutions. In addition, the uncharged drag-reduction properties of nine dilute polymer solutions were measured. No measurable dependence of drag reduction on electrical charge could be observed.
