The PLANES System: Natural Language Access To a Large Data Base.

Abstract

The PLANES system is designed to allow non-programmers to obtain information from a large relational data base by typing requests in English. PLANES can deal with pronoun reference, ellipsis and questions about itself. Examples of system operation and detailed program descriptions are included, along with discussions on the answering of vague or complex questions, browsing, the generation of clarifying dialogues with the user, adding the ability to handle new questions, and the organization and content of the data base.
