An Introduction to the Triad Subroutines,

Abstract

In its work to predict the effects of nuclear explosions, the Defense Nuclear Agency, through its contractors, conducts many difficult and time-consuming numerical calculations. In most cases, these calculations are performed using the CDC 6600 and CDC 7600 computers. These computers have capabilities for extremely rapid computations which are not usually accessible through the FORTRAN language. This report describes a general set of arithmetic subroutines which, when called in FORTRAN programs, will give the user a direct and straight-forward access to highly optimized machine performance. In the limit of a large string of identical operations, the subroutines described are between a factor of 1.4 and 3.3 faster than their FORTRAN equivalents. Several of the properties of the CDC 6600 and CDC 7600 which are used in these subroutines are slower but logically similar in form to those found in the CDC STAR and the ILLIAC 4. Therefore, in a very modest way, these subroutines and others of similar form and limitations may provide the user with an introduction to be more powerful computers now being constructed.
