Search for Whistler-Ducts During an Ionospheric Heating Experiment at Boulder, Colorado.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to describe the results of an attempt to correlate whistler activity with heating of the ionosphere by a high power, high frequency transmitter located near Boulder, Colorado. The experiment was carried out in March and April of 1972. It was hoped that some evidence might be found for the creation of whistler ducts associated with the ionospheric disturbances created by the high frequency heating transmitter. The ability to generate a whistler duct by high frequency heating would be valuable for a number of reasons. (1) It would provide a new tool for the study of both the heating process and the mechanism of duct formation. (2) It would aid in studying the electron density distribution and drifts of ionization in the magnetosphere by providing a duct of a known location in space. (3) It would provide a vlf communication channel between the hemispheres.
